Thursday 31 July 2014

BlackBerry is rounding out its multiplatform mission for BBM, announcing Today that the messaging service – a longstanding keystone of its operating system – is fully available on Windows Phone 8 and higher.
"We are intent on bringing the most popular application experiences to Windows Phone, and with BBM, we are pleased to bring many of its top features to the Windows Phone platform," said Bryan Biniak, Vice President and General Manager, Developer Experience, Microsoft. "BBM on Windows Phone brings our customers the secure, easy-to-use messaging experience they demand, and we expect that new features will roll out in the months to come."
A primative beta launch of BBM for Windows Phone began just a few weeks ago. The app was already available on iOS and Android, so landing permanent placement on the Windows Phone was the next logical fete for BlackBerry.
"As the popularity of BBM continues to grow, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to expand its availability to the Windows Phone community," said John Sims, President Global Enterprise Services at BlackBerry. "The BBM app for Windows Phone shows our commitment to supporting cross-platform capabilities, and we are excited to be working with Microsoft to deliver a new level of collaboration to the Windows Phone platform."
BlackBerry said BBM for Windows is tailored specifically for the Windows Phone UI, with a familiar, native user experience and a clean, modern design. Windows Phone users will find traditional BBM features such as Chats, Groups and Feeds within the app.

The BBM app for Windows Phone builds on the collaboration, privacy and security features that are at the core of the BBM experience loved by more than 85 million monthly active users around the world. Built specifically for the Windows Phone experience, BBM users will have a familiar, native user experience that embraces the clean, modern design of the Windows Phone UI.

Android phones that have local FM radio tuner

Before there was Google Play Music, Spotify, YouTube and PowerAmp, people would listen to music on the radio. And many people still do listen to the radio. Older cell phones often came with an FM tuner, however we are seeing more and more high end smartphones not having this classic feature, like some US versions of the Galaxy S3. If you are looking for a device that specifically has an FM tuner built-in, here is an non-exhaustive list of the smartphones that have it!

For phones that don’t have an FM Tuner, the user will have to use mobile data or Wi-Fi in order to listen to streamed music, radio channels and podcasts online, like Spotify, Google Play Music All Access, etc.
However, Samsung, Sony, HTC, LG and other manufacturers have included this feature. How do you use the FM radio? Open the app, and plug in your headphones into the jack, this serves as the antenna. Below you will find the list of all the devices.

  • Samsung Galaxy Ace
  • Samsung Galaxy Ace 4
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 1
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100

  • It's also worth pointing out that carriers often disable this feature, Verizon is the biggest culprit. Some devices may come with an FM Tuner, like the HTC One (M8), but Verizon disabled this. It's best to double check with your carrier beforehand, especially if you're with Verizon.

How to flash Firmware on Samsung devices without a PC

    Monday 28 July 2014

If you like to jump on the latest firmware bandwagon as soon as the file is available or like trying out different custom ROMs, you’re most likely pretty comfortable with flashing your device. One of the downsides is that in order to get to this point, you need to have Samsung smartphone or tablet, a PC, and the Odin recovery software. Thankfully, a new mobile version of Odin has been released that helps users skip the whole PC part of the process and enabling users to do everything from their Samsung smartphones and tablets
    Cover art

    Mobile Odin Pro

What it comes down to is Odin being transferred over from a PC application to an Android one: it performs all the same functions as before with being able to flash ROMs, kernels, modify elements of the operating system, and more. The great advantage is now that it’s in a mobile package and can be used while on the go.
The developer behind Mobile Odin Pro is the one and only chainfire, the mastermind behind SuperSU and other great developer tools for the Android platform. Just a note though: the application itself does cost $4.99, but is a great tool if you own a Samsung device and enjoy flashing new firmware/custom ROMs.
You can grab the APK from the XDA Developers forum

    How to use

The process is pretty much like what we do on the PC with Odin, but from the comfort of your smartphone. Here’s a quick breakdown:
    1. Find the firmware that you want to install on your device. SamMobile has a great repository of firmwares for all Samsung products, just make sure it is compatible with your version of your device.
    2. Start Mobile Odin Pro.
    3. Choose Open File and select the firmware that you’ve downloaded to your device. Usually, Mobile Odin Pro will automatically detect this if you installed it on SD, but you may need to find the exact file yourself.
    4. Once you’ve selected the file, you can choose a bunch of other options to perform when flashing such as enabling Ever Root, auto-installing SuperSU, and others.
    5. Once done, select Flash Firmware and the process will begin.
So really, that’s it! All the same Odin goodness that we’re used to, but in a nice mobile package.
How did you find the mobile version of Odin?

BBM coming to Windows Phone next week

    Sunday 27 July 2014

The hugely popular BBM app finally went cross-platform and arrived for iOS and Android devices last year, but those with Windows Phone devices have had to wait longer. The good news today is that BBM for Windows Phone is to make a general release next week now that it has gone through beta testing.

We knew that the BBM app for Windows Phone was on the way and last month we told how BlackBerry had confirmed that it would arrive by the end of July. A specific release date was not given at that time but it looks as though BlackBerry will just about deliver on time.

When registrations for the BBM beta app started there were 10,000 signups within the first 24 hours, and the app for beta testers was made available last week in the Windows Phone Store. Now BlackBerry has announced that the app will be available for everyone next week.

BBM version 2.0 for Windows Phone includes usual features such as Feeds, Chat and Contacts, and since beta testing began BlackBerry has responded to feedback from users by updating the app with bug fixes and new features. Earlier in the week an update brought transparent live tiles, a revamped UI for the picture preview window, and further additions.

BlackBerry hasn’t yet said exactly when the BBM app will go live for all on the Windows Phone Store next week, but at least we now know that it’s imminent.

    Skype update for Android

    Thursday 24 July 2014

Skype got a bit of a revamp on iOS, and today the Skype 5.0 update rolled out for Android. It’s a major update for the social app, and it will now be a whole lot easier to find your friends on the service.

The Skype 5.0 update brings several new featuers to the table, but first and foremost, is the ability to find your friends easier. The new update allows you to connect Skype to the address book on your handset which makes starting a Skype chat a breeze.

Once you install the update, at some point it will ask you to verify your phone number. From there the app will search for matches between your address book and Skype, so your contacts will ‘evolve’ as more people from your contact list join Skype. You can choose whether you want your address book contacts added to Skype, and modify or delete the number associated with your account.

In addition to the mobile address book implementation, you’ll have a new feature to look forward to if you use a Microsoft account. The new update can automatically connect your address book to other Microsoft services like Outlook and Windows 8. If you have a Windows 8 machine, you probably have a Microsoft account, so it’s handy feature to have if you’re a Skyper.

The Skype 5.0 update is live on Google Play, but it may take a few weeks before you’re prompted for verification to start the contact search. The company says the new friend finding feature will come to other platforms in the near future as well.

Thousands of Nigerians signup for PayPal

    Tuesday 22 July 2014

PayPal has signed up "tens of thousand" of Nigerians in its first week of operating in Africa's biggest economy, with consumers already purchasing items from Britain, China and the United States via its online platform, a company official said.
E-commerce remains in its infancy in most of Africa but is growing exponentially with the advent of online retailers such as Jumia, partly owned by South African phone operator MTN, and a growing middle class with money to spend.

Citizens of Africa's most populous nation could not buy goods directly from foreign merchants before the launch by PayPal, the payments unit of online auctioneer eBay Inc.
We have seen great uptake by Nigerians ... in terms of coverage," Malvina Goldfeld, PayPal's head of business development for sub-Saharan Africa, said in Lagos on Tuesday.
PayPal entered Nigeria and 10 other nations last month, providing online payment alternatives for consumers via mobile phones or PCs in markets often blighted by financial fraud. The new markets bring the number of countries PayPal serves to 203.
Goldfeld said that Paypal secured a few deals with electronics suppliers in China and Dubai ahead of its launch and that it had partnered with Nigerian lender First Bank, which has more than 10.5 million customers.
    FASHION AND ELECTRONICS
PayPal launched its platform in South Africa four years ago, Kenya last year and now Nigeria, Goldfeld said, giving the company access to shoppers across 40 sub-saharan African countries.
Goldfeld said the biggest interest has been in products from the United States, Britain and China, adding: "People are buying everything ... (but) there's definitely a concentration in electronics and fashion."
However, worries over internet security and online fraud have held back e-commerce growth in Nigeria, where 63 million people have active internet data subscriptions but only 1 percent of them make online transactions, First Bank said, noting that online purchases are expected to reach $1 billion this year.
Though challenges remain - including abysmal infrastructure, port delays, other supply chain woes and the task of persuading shoppers to trust websites with their bank details - Goldfeld says PayPal's reach will help to speed improvements.

"A lot of the merchants that we work with ... already ship to Nigeria. I think that the growth of e-commerce will push the logistics customers to up their game," she said.

Tekken 7 official, prepped for launch on consoles

    Sunday 20 July 2014

Within the next few days we’re going to see a whole bunch of details on the return of one of the original 3D fighting games: Tekken 7. This game will feature a far longer trailer than what you’re about to see during San Diego Comic Con

This trailer features to the return of a classic character which you’ll have to gain an appreciation for in your own viewing. Shadow of the beast, questioning Kazuya - the original shadow warriors bring back the heat.

There’s word that The Final Battle is revealed ever-so-slightly differently between the English trailer and the Japanese trailer

While we know precious little about this game or its contents, of one thing we can be sure: this game will not be made for last-gen consoles. Unreal Engine 4 is made for systems at least as new as the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, so Bandai Namco isn’t fooling around with those systems of the past.
Game Director / Chief Producer of Tekken (now and for the past 20 years having worked on the series) will be Katsuhiro Harada. This man is part of Namco Bandai as well as 765 Production, and will be taking the lead on this project. This was announced for the first time officially this week at EVO 2014.
Harada will be appearing at a "FIGHTING GAME PANEL", as he calls it, at SDCC this next week. This will take place on Friday July 25, 2014 12:00pm - 1:00pm Pacific Time. According to the media, taken by Harada, he’s already arrived. It’s time!

Malaysian passenger airliner shot down with 295 on board
A Malaysian passenger airliner with 295 people on board has been reportedly shot down in Donetsk, Ukraine near the Russian border.
The Boeing 777 plane was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
Anton Herashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine's interior minister, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying the plane had been hit by a missile at an altitude of 10,000m (33,000ft), as BBC News writes.
A Malaysia Airlines official has confirmed the news and CNN confirms the black box from the aircraft has been found.

The Boeing 777 reportedly had 280 passengers and 15 crew members on board.
The plane appeared to have broken up before impact, "with the wreck scattered over a wide area in the village of Grabovo, as BBC News notes.

Citizen-shot video has surfaced reportedly showing the crash site.
The above video reportedly shows the moment of impact when the plane crashed.

The route taken by the Malaysian flight is a very common one between Kuala Lumpur and the Netherlands, according to CNN aviation safety consultant Mary Schiavo. "She noted that the plane was flying over a troubled area and said close communication with air traffic controllers would be a key necessity.

The accident comes after Beijing-bound Boeing 777-200 - carrying 239 people, had mysteriously vanished on March 8 en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur. More details are forthcoming.
