Cisco, Google, SAP discussing BlackBerry bids

BlackBerry Ltd, on the block as its smartphone business struggles, is in talks with Cisco Systems, Google Inc and SAP about selling them all or parts of itself, several sources close to the matter said.

The company, based in Waterloo, Ontario, has asked for preliminary expressions of interest from potential strategic buyers, which also includeIntel Corp and Asian companies LG and Samsung, by early next week.
It is unclear which parties will bid, if any. But the potential technology buyers have been especially interested in BlackBerry's secure server network and patent portfolio, although doubts about the assets' value remain an issue, the sources said.
Google, Intel, Cisco, LG and SAP declined to comment. Samsung was not immediately available for comment.
Possible bidders are proceeding with caution given the uncertainty around BlackBerry, which last month reported a quarterly loss of nearly $1 billion after taking a writedown on unsold Z10 phones.
The value of BlackBerry's patent portfolio and licensing agreements is likely to halve in the next 18 months, a company filing from this week shows, potentially limiting its attractiveness.

Private equity firms that have showed interest in BlackBerry - which also include Cerberus Capital Management - have asked the company and its advisers to provide additional financial details about its various business segments, two of the sources said. That process could take another few weeks, as BlackBerry focuses on taking bids from industry peers, the sources said.
In August, the company said it was weighing its options, which could include an outright sale, after first reported that BlackBerry's board was warming up to the possibility of going private.
At that time, it formed a five-member special committee chaired by board director Timothy Dattels. Other members include Chairman Barbara Stymiest, Chief Executive Thorsten Heins, Richard Lynch and Bert Nordberg.
A spokesman for BlackBerry said in an emailed statement "The special committee, with the assistance of BlackBerry's independent financial and legal advisors, is conducting a robust and thorough review of strategic alternatives." He declined to provide further comment.

Nearby Alien Planet Has “Plasma” Water

Astronomers researching the nearby alien planet called Gliese 1214 b have determined that the atmosphere of this super-Earth has an atmosphere that is water-rich, including a strange “plasma form” of water.
However, the high temperature and density of the planet mean that it is drastically different from Earth.
Gliese 1214 b“As the temperature and pressure are so high, water is not in a usual form (vapor, liquid, or solid), but in an ionic or plasma form at the bottom the atmosphere — namely the interior — of Gliese 1214 b,” principle investigator Norio Narita of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan told SPACE.com by email.

Gliese 1214 b is located 40 light-years from the solar system in the constellation Ophiuchus and orbits its cooler, low-mass M-type star once every 38 hours, 70 times closer than Earth is to the sun.
It is the location that causes temperatures that can reach as high as 540 degrees Fahrenheit. It is possible that these temperatures affect the hydrogen and carbon chemistry, producing a haze in the atmosphere. However it is not easy to discover whether the weather is clear or overcast because the differences in the two atmospheres are small.
“At high pressure and high temperature, the behavior of water is quite different from that on the Earth,” Narita said. “At the bottom of the water-rich atmosphere of Gliese 1214 b, water should be a super-critical fluid.”
Because this planet does not have a solid surface, it is difficult to define the height of the atmosphere. So atmospheric scientists have come up with a concept known as scale height,  a height determined by changes in the increase or decrease of atmospheric pressure by a set amount. According to Narita, the scale height of Gliese 1214 b is three times deeper than that of Earth.
“We predict that ionic or plasma water can be seen deep inside the planet,” he said. “However, we may not be able to find hot ‘ice’ — high pressure-ices — inside of Gliese 1214 b.”
Scientists often feel that water is a necessary ingredient for life but Narita thinks that due to this planet’s close orbit, there isn’t much chance of the planet being habitable.
“Although water vapor can exist in the atmosphere, liquid water — namely oceans — would not exist on the surface of this planet,” he said. “So unfortunately, we do not think this planet would be habitable.”
It was the MEarth Project that originally discovered this planet. They track more than 2,000 low-mass stars in order to search for new planets.
Narita and his team will continue to study Gliese 1214 b using spectroscopic observations in the visible wavelength.

Nova is a flat, pocket-fitting LED flash that’s the size of a credit card. It uses Bluetooth in order to connect to your smartphone. By using a customized app, you are able to adapt the the color of light  of your environment, so that Nova flashes in all light conditions with the appropriate light temperature. When the flash isn’t needed, the gadget can be stowed easily in your pocket, purse or wallet.

Like mentioned above, Nova can easily connected to the smartphone via Bluetooth, which presents the advantage of not have a cable constantly being in the way. Dell Reveals New Tablets

downloadDell has just revealed its latest tablet devices with two of them being Android devices and the other two devices being Windows devices. The Windows devices will come in 11 and 8 inch variations while the Android offerings will come in 7 and 8 inch variations.

The Dell Venue 8 Pro, which is going for $180 when it comes out, is a Windows 8.1 based tablet which will have the ability to integrate with an existing corporate environment and will also work with existing Microsoft applications and will also integrate with Microsoft Office. The other more expensive Windows tablet, the Dell Venue 11 Pro, will be going for $500 and will also have the same features.
The other Windows versions of the tablets are the Dell Venue 8 and the Dell Venue 7.
With these product lines, Dell made it a point to emphasize how stylish the devices are and how they also will have a long product life.

Apple's Biggest Weakness Highlighted by Android-pioneers

Many of Google's Android hardware partners, including Samsung , LG, and HTC, have been caught inflating their benchmark scores. According to AnandTech, several Android handsets, like Samsung's latest Galaxy Note 3, are loaded with code designed to cheat common testing software.
Fortunately for Google, these underhanded tactics should make little difference to Android's advance. Ironically, they highlight one of Android's greatest strengths -- a fundamental advantage the mobile operating system has over Apple's iOS.

The average smartphone buyer doesn't care about specsSimply put, the average would-be smartphone buyer doesn't care about benchmarks. They don't consider clock speeds, or think about the number of cores the processor on their latest smartphone sports.

Apple's newest iPhone, the iPhone 5S, is unique in that it has a 64-bit processor, making it the most powerful smartphone on the planet. Yet, this is one fact that you won't find emphasized in Apple's advertising: Apple understands that numbers don't sell phones.
This year, at a Goldman Sachs conference, Apple's CEO Tim Cook explained why Apple doesn't care to talk about specs:
"The PC industry over the years, the way that companies competed were two things: specs and price. And so people would want to say, 'I've got the largest drive,' or, 'I've got the fastest processor,' ... The truth is, customers want a great experience, and they want quality ... that's rarely a function of any [specs] ... These are things ... companies invent because they can't have a great experience ... Do you know the speed of an [iPad chip]? ... Does it really matter at the end of the day?"
Cook's reasoning isn't confined to Apple. Motorola's latest phone, the Moto X, is underpowered compared to its Android rivals, and yet, the phone has been well reviewed. Rather than spend money on improving the device's internals, Google's subsidiary chose to do something different -- offering a stripped down interface with a highly customizable exterior.

So why do companies like Samsung care?That raises the obvious question: If consumers aren't swayed by clock speeds, why go through the trouble of trying to game them? I can't speak for the companies in particular, but I think it's reasonable to assume that boosting benchmark scores is simply another way to get ahead of the competition.
Although it may be tiny, there is undoubtedly some subset of smartphone buyers that considers hardware performance. Among these consumers, better benchmark scores might just result in a few extra sales.

Cutthroat competition produces innovationAs Samsung's Note 3 is an incredibly powerful handset, even factoring out Samsung's special software. Although it sports the sameQualcomm processor as the rival LG G2, an extra gigabyte of RAM gives it the edge. Samsung's willingness to inflate the scores of an already powerful phone highlights something about the Android market: competition is cutthroat.
Unlike Apple, Samsung has to worry about consumer defection. For Apple, consumers looking for an iOS device have only one choice: the iPhone. But Samsung's Galaxy phones run Android, just like literally hundreds of other handsets. If the latest Galaxy handset isn't up to their liking, they can easily make the jump to a phone manufactured by LG, Sony, HTC, or any other Android OEM. Although Samsung phones account for the majority of Android handsets sold today, that might not always be the case.

While the threat of competition may not benefit Samsung shareholders, it's great for the Android ecosystem in general, and by extension, Google. With multiple Android hardware makers competing so fiercely against one another, Android handsets have improved rapidly.
Phablets, for example, came out of the Android universe, as Samsung tinkered with different screen sizes. Motorola, with its Droid Maxx, has pushed the limits of smartphone battery life, while Sony was the first company to offer a water-resistant smartphone and tablet. In China, upstart companies like Xiaomi have been able to offer powerful, dirt-cheap handsets.

Google is leveraging the power of the open OS modelBy letting multiple hardware manufacturers use its mobile operating system, Google is leveraging the basic laws of economics against Apple. Sure, Google's hardware partners must compete with the iPhone, but the true competition is against each other.
That intense competition may occasionally result in some unfortunate outcomes, such as Samsung's alleged rigging of benchmark scores. Yet, more important are the innovations that have been produced by that competition; in the end, that could give Android the advantage over iOS.

Sony Acknowledges it's the Underdog in America

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida has expressed his admiration for Microsoft's decision to change the Xbox One, saying competition is healthy.
Sony Acknowledges it's the Underdog in AmericaIn an interview with Games Industry, the Sony Worldwide Studios boss acknowledged the company faces a fight to make the PlayStation 4 the dominant console in North America, but he's glad that Microsoft changed aspects of the Xbox One to make things harder for Sony.

It's always great to have two companies fighting each other," he said. "People like it; it creates a news story. The games media will cover any platform launch, but the general media - a big Sony versus Microsoft battle is a bigger story. Microsoft launching Xbox One in the same year, the same Christmas - people compare them, lots of news stories are written."
When the interviewer suggested strong PS4 pre-orders were due to Microsoft mis-marketing the Xbox One, Yoshida was quick to disagree, calling the rival company's efforts "great". Asked to expand upon this further, he explained that the swiftness with which policy changes were embraced showed Microsoft was committed to gamers, which can only be a good thing for consumers.

We never took [Microsoft] lightly Especially in the States, we are the challenger - we're trying to compete with them.

We know they're very smart people," he said. "It's great that they were able to quickly realise that some of the things they were doing were not popular, and were able to make really quick decisions to change some of those things - even things that their engineering group must have spent a lot of time preparing before the launch. It must have been a very tough time for them. That shows how smart they are, and it shows their dedication to making Xbox One successful.
"We never took them lightly. Especially in the States, we are the challenger - we're trying to compete with them. Some of the messaging that they stumbled on just gave us more chances to compete with them in the States. Other markets are very different - in Europe, we have a larger market share and in Japan, we have a much longer history of being here. Being consistent and persistent helps; the legacy and people's associations with the brand, their memories of having a great time before.
Despite this appreciation for Microsoft, Yoshida is keen to emphasise the strengths of the PlayStation 4; specifically the fact that the console is completely gamer-focused, with a hardware design that'll enable developers from all walks of life to coax the best out of the machine in the years ahead.
We continue to say what we've been saying since February," he said. "PS4 is really designed for consumers and focused on how people want to play games. At the same time, we've really made sure that it's hardware which game developers will enjoy making games on. We want consumers to look at how much fun it is to use this system, not just for playing games but for finding out about games and sharing the experience with other people.
Something that can be a weakness but can be a very strong asset for the PlayStation team is the management team that we have. Many of us in key positions have gone through all the transitions from the launch of PS1. Andrew House, Jack Tretton, myself and many of the executives were all there at the beginning. We've gone through great times and pretty difficult times together. I've never worked for another company, so I can just imagine, but we have a very efficient way of discussing issues and being open and honest. We make quick decisions when necessary, and that's something that's very fresh to me.
The Xbox One is due to launch globally on November 22, while the PlayStation 4 will be available in North America on November 15 and in Europe on November 29. Both are available to pre-order/reserve now at online retailers in multiple territories.

Scientists Charge Nokia Phone With Lightning

Bringing something to life through the power of lightning sounds more like a theme from a novel or movie but scientists  have been able to charge a mobile phone with the help of a lightning bolt.

It is hoped that by harnessing this natural power source, areas with a short electricity supply could use this as an alternative energy source.


The team used a transformer to recreate a lightning bolt in the laboratory by passing 200,000 volts across an 11-inch air gap.
“We were amazed to see that the Nokia circuitry somehow stabilised the noisy signal, allowing the battery to be charged,” said Neil Palmer, from the University of Southampton’s high voltage laboratory. “This discovery proves devices can be charged with a current that passes through the air, and is a huge step towards understanding a natural power like lightning and harnessing its energy.

Do Not Try This At Home

Lightning is not something to be messed with and Nokia’s executive vice-president for sales is keen to point out that it is not something people should try at home.

But for the mobile industry, finding ways of charging and improving batteries is a priority. Ben Wood from the analyst firm CCS Insight, thinks that they are on to a good thing with this breakthrough.
“Nokia has been among the forerunners of device-charging technology for some time. It’s also very committed to caring for the environment. So it’s perhaps not surprising that the company’s involved in what might appear to be a wacky idea.”
He also thinks that it could benefit those living in rural areas.
“If you live in a remote village in any part of the World you might welcome the possibility of a communal device that charges phones.”

Samsung, LG and Nokia have all been reported to be experimenting with kinetic displays, but contain your excitement because it is more likely that these smartphones will have a contoured display.



So what is the difference? Well a bendable screen is one you can actually wiggle and bend, a contoured display is a screen that has a glass topper molded into a subtle stationary arc.
Some devices already feature the curved display, such as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus S. The YotaPhone, which is curently in development, achieves the desired curve through formed Gorilla Glass 3 as the cover glass material.
Seeing as Samsung can already produced contoured displays, it is likely that the new smartphone, which is expected this month,  will feature a curved screen allowing its face to fit to your cheek, making it  alot more comfortable to conduct long phone conversations. It will also help the smartphone to stand out from its competitors, changing the standard shape of phones from a box-like form and into something far more interesting and appealing.
But what about bendable displays. Well unfortunately that is still something for the future. A material that is flexible enough but still strong so as not to break is a big ask.
Major advancements in engineering and the necessary materials are needed before the tech industry can start to think about selling us a truly bendable device.

Tesco Hudl Tablet Priced At £119

Shopping giant Tesco launches a seven inch tablet computer very reasonably priced at £119; the name of this low end piece of kit is the Hudl.  The supermarket retailer is in high hopes that the colourful Android-operated gadget will attract customers who might not have been able to afford a tablet computer beforehand.Hudl
The device itself is not too bad, with fairly ok specifications: It has a high-definition widescreen display, is capable of nine hours of video battery life, and has under the hood, 16GB of storage memory which can be extended to a massive 48GB!  It also comes with a whole range of in-built apps, including YouTube and Google Chrome and users can download new apps on the Google Play store.
Tesco’s tablet comes in a variety of colours (blue, red and purple), has wifi, Bluetooth and a micro HDMI port and is designed to be easy to use and handle.  Tesco Clubcard customers will be better off than non customers as they will be able to get their hands on a Hudl for less than £100.  The tablet has an in-built Tesco launcher button, which allows users to shop, see their Clubcard points, listen to music and watch movies on Tesco’s Blinkbox system (the streaming service similar to Lovefilm or Netflix).  The service has no problems with no issues whatsoever.
Tesco chief executive, Philip Clarke said: “Hudl is a colourful, accessible tablet for the whole family to enjoy…The first stage in our tablet offering, it’s convenient, integrated and easy to use with no compromise on spec…Being online is an increasingly essential part of family life and whilst tablets are on the rise, usage is still quite limited…We feel the time is right for Tesco to help widen tablet ownership and bring the fun, convenience and excitement of tablets to even more customers across the UK…The digital revolution should be for the many, not for the few.”

Japanese NTT Docomo unveiled augmented reality glasses that are able to translate menus and signs in real time.
The company, which showed off the device at a Japanese gadget fair, says the glasses will be ready when foreigners descend on Tokyo for the 2020 Olympics.
The glasses work by overlaying someone's native language onto unfamiliar text. This could be especially valuable in Japan, which doesn't always have translated menus at the ready.
The glasses do more than just read, though: They also have a facial recognition function that can determine a person's identity and job title from a smartphone directory.

Dead Trigger 2 on Android and iOS

The most successful Android smartphone manufacturer in the game, Samsung, with a value of nearly $40 billion (20 percent increase) comes in at 8th place. So you see again: as successful as Samsung may be, despite its broad product offering within and outside the smartphone market, it simply cannot keep up with a brand like Apple. Whether that is subjectively understandable or not, of course, is a question that can be argued at length

In addition to Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung, there is another player in the top 100 which appears to be the biggest loser amongst smartphone-related companies: Nokia. Once the leading world power in the mobile market, the Finnish company has taken a 65 percent nose dive in value to come to rest at 57th position, behind Philips, Siemens and Sony. Microsoft, which ranked fifth this year, must be feeling like the purchase of the mobile division of Nokia was all a bit of a bargain.

Nestlé is also found in the list this year in 56th position. It will be interesting to see how their partnership with the number two spot holder's Android platform might affect their value in the coming year.

BlackBerry and Microsoft: The Fight to Reclaim Past Glory

Both BlackBerry and Microsoft have been in far stronger positions with regard to personal technology. At one time, Microsoft was contending for leadership in smartphones against Palm and BlackBerry, and BlackBerry took leadership only to lose it to Apple and then Samsung. Microsoft put tablets on the map in the early part of last decade, but it missed a memo and Apple refined them to success -- pointing out that beauty, price and battery life rule in something you hold.
In the end, I think both companies are on a path to turn around their fortunes and they are making progress. Because BlackBerry is fighting for its life, it is making more of the necessary moves more aggressively.

We live in a fickle world, though. Leaders during one period may be gone the next, as Palm, Compaq and Netscape have demonstrated. Still, death can be defeated -- as IBM, Apple and the U.S. auto industry have demonstrated. There is a path back. Microsoft is still a major power, and BlackBerry isn't yet in as much trouble as Apple was when Steve Jobs reclaimed the helm.

Fascination

I'm kind of fascinated by some of the Apple fans who post. During much of the last decade, many of those who were most visible made fun of people who had called Apple dead prior to its recovery. Now, many of those same people are convinced Microsoft and BlackBerry are dead, showcasing that they didn't really learn from the mistakes of the folks they ridiculed.
One thing you learn in this business, particularly after watching IBM and the entire U.S. auto industry come back from the brink, is that it really isn't over until it is over. A significant change in leadership can turn a loser into a winner, and there is no better example than Apple -- which went from death watch to the most highly valued company in the world in one short decade.
It does take time, and in a world with TV programs that solve major conflicts in 30 minutes to two hours, I can understand why folks point at a failure and scream "death!" However, we don't live in a TV drama or situation comedy.

BlackBerry's condition

Of the two firms, BlackBerry is in the most trouble at the moment. The cause is that for an extended time, it thought it was unbeatable. Once it became clear it was vulnerable, it tried to chase Apple instead of doubling down on its own strengths. That attempt ended badly.
Samsung did demonstrate that with massive spending, you could catch Apple from behind and bypass it -- but even with its massive resources (Samsung spent three times as much as Apple), it still needed Google to get the job done, and BlackBerry simply didn't have those kinds of resources. Nor did it have Google's help to get apps.
When you are outmatched, you have to focus on your strengths and tightly target your unique users. Business segments like government, pharmaceuticals, legal, banking (particularly trading), and healthcare have compliance and work requirements that favor BlackBerry's unique strengths and direct sales model.
BlackBerry is focusing on this segment and its strengths -- and like Dell and BMC, it is going private so it isn't distracted by having to meet financial analyst quarterly pressures as it attempts to turn reverse its fortunes. This is what IBM did and it worked. IBM stepped away from all of its consumer efforts and focused on its core business. The result: IBM is once again one of the most powerful technology companies in the world. The strategy works, but it will take a number of years to make this happen. IBM started in the early 90s and wasn't really out of the woods until the end of the decade.
Part of undertaking a turnaround is getting on the right path -- and now, finally, BlackBerry may be on the right path. Granted, it still has to execute.

Microsoft Situation

Surface 2 is a vastly better set of products than the Surface Microsoft debuted last year. However, the issue isn't just building something better. If you improve your product by 100 percent and the leader improves theirs by 200 percent, your efforts are considerable -- but you'll still lose. The issues for the first-generation Surface were threefold: The products weren't as attractive as the iPad, the most competitive product using the ARM processor; they didn't use Outlook ,and folks who might have used it saw it as crippled as a result; and the Surface Pro was not only too expensive and too heavy -- it had lousy battery life.
Oh, and instead of marketing like it is now, showcasing the product's advantages over the iPad, Microsoft focused on the keyboard's unique way of attaching to the device. The campaign drove interest, but it didn't drive sales.
Now I'd still like to see Microsoft focus more on the appearance, but it has improved the ARM-based product so that it isn't crippled, and on specs, it is better than the iPad for the money. The exception is app support, which is improved but still lags Apple. The Intel-based product I still struggle with a bit, because it is an Ultrabook with a small screen, and the target of this product is more MacBook Air than iPad.
Given that I'd suggest a different industrial design with a larger screen, Ultrabooks with 11-inch screens typically don't sell that well. However, having said that, if there were a product that would get folks to consider a full-fledged laptop in a tablet form factor, this would be it. It is small, light, and with the new battery keyboard, it has segment-leading battery life.
If folks see this as a more portable and flexible MacBook Air or a more capable iPad, the Surface 2 might pull off a surprise win. I think the odds are against this, but we've seen folks win before when the odds were against them. The iPhone is the perfect example of this.
I'd put my money on the ARM version of Surface as being the better seller.

Conclution:It Isn't Over

The old saying is that "it isn't over until the Fat Lady sings," and that lady hasn't sung for either company. Microsoft will be getting different leadership shortly, and while I think its strategy is weaker than BlackBerry's, it has vastly more funding -- and resources can often make a huge difference.
In the end, I think both companies are on a path to turn around their fortunes and they are making progress. Because BlackBerry is fighting for its life, I think it is making more of the necessary moves more aggressively. I doubt Jobs would have been successful had Apple not been on death watch; in fact, it wouldn't have brought him back if that hadn't been the case, given that he was fired for cause.
BlackBerry clearly has that fear, and Microsoft's resources may be preventing it from making the dramatic moves needed to truly turn around its tablet and smartphone trends. We'll see.

Scientists Catch Up in Understanding Light

Scientists from Harvard University Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the California Institute of Technology have demonstrated that light can
behave in a way previously observed only in science fiction -- that is,
photons can bond and create a molecule. The fundamental properties of
light derive from the fact that photons, which are the quanta of light,
do not interact with one another. That's most easily seen by shining two beams of light at each other cross-wise -- the beams pass through one other.

Scientific experiment shown that something like the light sabers the Jedi wielded in Star Wars is not outside the realm of possibility. That is, light can behave as though it has mass. Though their work may not produce "an elegant weapon for a more civilized age," it could lead to advances in quantum computing, 3D modeling and other as-yet-unimagined applications.

What we have done is create a special type of medium in which photons interact with each other so strongly that they begin to act as though they have mass," said Mikhail Lukin, a professor of physics at Harvard University
Light's ability to behave this way has been theoretically predicted by scientists for some time, although this is the first time experimental proof has been provided.

About Photons

A photon is considered to be massless like gauge bosons and gluons.
In empty space, photons move at the speed of light.
If photons had mass, they would not move at the exact speed of light in a vacuum; instead, their speed would be lower and would depend on their frequency.
If a photon had mass, it would mean Coulomb's law would not hold true. That would cause the presence of an electric field inside a hollow conductor when it was subjected to an external electric field.
Further, it would impact observation of the galactic magnetic field because that field can only be observed if photons have no mass.
Photons inside superconductors develop what's called a "non-zero effective mass," meaning that the mass they seem to have when responding to forces

What the Researchers Did

The researchers pumped rubidium atoms into a vacuum chamber, then used lasers to cool the cloud of atoms to a few degrees above absolute zero.
They then fired single photons into the cloud using extremely weak laser pulses.
When they fired two photons into the cloud, the two exited together as one molecule.
When one photon entered the cloud, it handed off part of its energy to the cloud and slowed down. However, when two were pumped into the cloud, they leveraged the Rydberg blockade effect.
That basically let the photons push and pull each other through the cloud, then exit together, behaving like a molecule.
"While it's true that photons do not interact with each other, they do interact with electrons in materials and the electromagnetic fields created by the electrons in matter," said UT Austin's Horton.
The two-photon bound state was created owing to the distortion of the surrounding electromagnetic fields, he suggested.

Reactions to the Experiment

The interactions observed "only occur in the presence of matter which responds in a very nonlinear way to the presence of photons," Andrew Cleland, a professor of physics atUniversity of California at Santa Barbara,
Rydberg atoms are one example of a medium that responds in a nonlinear way, where there are different responses depending on whether zero, one or two photons pass through the medium.
The binding of photons to one another through the medium "is analogous to superconductivity, in which electrons bind to one another via their interactions with the positive ion background in the superconductor," Cleland said. "I think calling it a new state of matter is not unheard of; that's what superconductivity is called.

Possible Uses for Paired Photons

The researchers' discovery may enable the building of quantum computers, because photons remain the best means of carrying quantum information, and quantum logic requires interactions between individual quanta, according to Lukin. Until now, it was thought that photons could not be used because they don't interact with each other.
Other possible uses might be in classical computing and the creation of complex 3D structures such as crystals wholly out of light, Lukin suggested.
"Slow light has found important applications," observed Horton, "so the control of signals which are based on light would be a natural area where the discovery could make important contributions to society.
