Lagos State Govt. Visit Prophet T.B Joshua! On Ebola Case

Monday, 4 August 2014

The fear of Ebola is the beginning of wisdom, as the fear of the spread of Ebola continues in Nigeria, both the Federal and state govt are doing all they can to avoid any case 0f Ebola in the country.
The Lagos State Government and some federal delegates on Sunday paid a visit to the General Overseer of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, Prophet Temitope Joshua.

According to the Lagos State Commissioner for Health who led the delegation, Dr. Jide Idris, the visit was also to make sure that no victim of the virus came into the church from any of the affected countries.
“We have our strategies that we intend to share with you. Again, we need to know the resources you have here because whether it is one or two cases, if they are allowed to get out, it is a major problem. We are here to work together on how to contain this disease.”
Pastor-T-B-Joshua-360x247The delegation decided to pay the visit to the SCOAN because of the recognition that it was an international Christian centre whose congregation comprised people from all over the world, including the countries of the West African sub-Region which had already been infected by the Ebola disease.
The Director, Centre for Disease Control, Professor Abdulsalami Nasidi, added that the visit was also to inform the Synagogue leader of the deadliness of the Ebola Virus, and ensure that it did not escape into the country.
The general overseer of the Synagogue church, Prof T.B Joshua pledged his support and also promised to suspend some of his major Church healing programmes for a few weeks adding, “I am ready to work with you. I love my country and I will be ready to work with you. Even if it is a rumour, there is need to secure our environment to ensure that it is safe.”
For the first time in a long while, we see our government swinging into action, instead of mere talks.
It was speculated that the infected Liberian man mr sawyer who came into the country with ebola was heading to the Synagogue church for healing, but collapsed on arrival and was rushed to be hospitalized.
What’s your take?

Laboratory Scientists Experimented On Anti-Ebola Vaccine.

Kolanut has been found to halt the deadly Ebola virus in its tracks
in laboratory tests. Scientists used a compound from Garcinia kola, a
plant commonly eaten in West Africa.

Compounds from the plant have
also proved effective against some strains of flu.

If the anti-Ebola
compound proves successful in animal and human trials, it will be the
first medicine to successfully treat the virus that causes Ebola
hemorrhagic fever – an often-fatal condition.

The discovery was announced at the 16th International Botanical
Congress in St Louis in the US.

The Ebola virus was first documented in 1976 after an outbreak in
Zaire – now the Democratic Republic of the Congo – where 88 per cent
of the 318 human cases died.
More recently, a 1995 outbreak in the same country had a death rate of
81% of the 315 infected.

There are four types of the virus – Ebola-Zaire, Ebola-Sudan and
Ebola-Ivory Coast all affect humans, while Ebola-Reston has so far
only affected monkeys and chimpanzees.

However, doctors have been unable to stop the virus once infection has
taken hold – hence the disease has gained a terrifying reputation.

Traditional origins
Dr. Maurice Iwu, who set up and heads the Bio-resources Development and
Conservation Programme, led the research.

It started 10 years ago when researchers were led to the plant by
traditional native healers who have used the plant for the treatment
of infectious diseases for centuries.

"This is a very exciting discovery," said Dr. Iwu, who himself comes
originally from a family of traditional healers.

"The same forest that yields the dreaded Ebola virus could be a source
of the cure."
The virus multiplies rapidly in the human body and quickly overwhelms
it, and in advanced cases the patient develops high fever and severe
bleeding.

The Garcinia kola compound has been shown to halt multiplication of
the virus in the laboratory.

If repeated in humans, this would give
the body a chance to fight off the virus.

The active compound is what is known as a dimeric flavonoid, which is
two flavonoid molecules fused together.
Flavonoids are non-toxic and can be found in orange and lemon rinds as
well as the colourings of other plants.

Drugs Availability

The tests are in the early stages still, but the researchers hope that
if they continue to prove successful with the compound, the US Food and Drug
Administration will put it on a fast track – making a drug available
to humans within a matter of years.

"The discovery of these important properties in a simple compound – flavonoids – was very surprising," said Dr. Iwu.
"The structure of this compound lends itself to modification, so it
provides a template for future work.
"Even if this particular drug does not succeed through the whole drug
approval process, we can use it to construct a new drug for this
deadly disease."

Doctor Who Treated Liberian Man Contacted the Virus

A Lagos doctor who treated the Liberian man that died few days ago of Ebola Virus has tested positive to the Virus, Nigeria’s Minister of Health said on Monday.
The minister broke the news on Monday during the inauguration of a treatment research group for Ebola in Nigeria .
ebola-outbreak-in-ugandaAccording to the Minister, 70 people are now placed under surveillance while eight people would be quarantined on Monday for developing symptoms of the disease.
Apart from taking those steps, the government has also set up a treatment research group, that will carry out treatment research, receive and verify treatment claims as well as advise government on issues relating to Ebola virus in Nigeria.
The group which is co-chaired by Professor Shingu Gamaliel and Professor Innocent Ujah also has Maurice Iwu, a Professor of Pharmacognosy and officials from the Centre for Disease Control as members.
The minister advised the public to be wary of treatment claims including the use of bitter-cola as most treatment findings are still in their laboratory stages.
There is currently no known cure for Ebola virus in the world, but medical experts say efforts are on to find a remedy to the disease that has claimed over seven hundred since its out-break this year.

Summit: African Leaders To Undergo Ebola Tests In US

Sunday, 3 August 2014

United States, President Barack Obama has revealed that some African participants attending the African/American Leaders Summit billed for Monday in Washington DC will undergo screening for the dreaded Ebola virus.

Nigeria’s President, Goodluck Jonathan is expected to be there along his aides and other African leaders.
Obama explained the reason for such, was the prevention and protection of the United States from an outbreak of the killer disease that has been ravaging west Africa.
He said, “Folks who are from these countries that have even a marginal risk, or an infinitesimal risk of having been exposed in some fashion, we’re making sure we’re doing screening.”
President of Liberia and Sierra Leone, Mrs Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and Ernest BaiKoroma, respectively have however stated that they won’t attend the meeting due to their country being in shutdown mode after the outbreak.
Also foreign professional health bodies and medical experts have described Nigeria’s response to the outbreak of Ebola in its borders as very poor and have condemned the poor preventive measures put in place by the Federal Government.
Nigeria has only still one case of Ebola virus after, Liberian man Patrick Sawyer, flew into the country in July 20 and collapsed on his arrival to Lagos, then rushed to the hospital.
Where he was diagnosed with  EVD. He later died on July 25.
Ebola, which has killed scores in Guinea, Gambia and Sierra Leone and Liberia, is an acute viral illness and often characterised by fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat.
These are followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding.

Free Hulu media contents now on Android

Hulu has just announced that users of the updated Hulu app for Android will now be able to access the same free ad-supported content as that found on Hulu.com.
Hulu, has decided to give Android users a very nice gift anyway: free streaming content on their redesigned mobile app, you will no longer require a subscription to watch Hulu content on your mobile device. Well, that is, unless you have an iOS device.
Apple owners will be getting the free treatment soon enough though, when the Hulu app for iOS gets an update, which the Android app has just received. The streaming content you'll be able to watch for free will of course still be ad-supported in the app, but previously you could only watch free content without a subscription on Hulu's website. For the ad-averse or seriously screen addicted amongst you, there's always Hulu Plus.
Cover artHulu has indicated that not all content is included in the new offering, but states that ''the content available on the updated app will mirror the ad-supported Hulu.com with a few exceptions.'' Hulu's press release clearly states ''sample content'' though, so don't think this means you'll be able to access the full paid Hulu library with ads on your mobile. Rather, this is clearly a move to get you hooked on your portable device so that you'll be more inclined to invest in a subscription. Until then though, you can start streaming for free on the go!

Android phones that have local FM radio tuner

Before there was Google Play Music, Spotify, YouTube and PowerAmp, people would listen to music on the radio. And many people still do listen to the radio. Older cell phones often came with an FM tuner, however we are seeing more and more high end smartphones not having this classic feature, like some US versions of the Galaxy S3. If you are looking for a device that specifically has an FM tuner built-in, here is an non-exhaustive list of the smartphones that have it!

For phones that don’t have an FM Tuner, the user will have to use mobile data or Wi-Fi in order to listen to streamed music, radio channels and podcasts online, like Spotify, Google Play Music All Access, etc.
However, Samsung, Sony, HTC, LG and other manufacturers have included this feature. How do you use the FM radio? Open the app, and plug in your headphones into the jack, this serves as the antenna. Below you will find the list of all the devices.

  • Samsung Galaxy Ace
  • Samsung Galaxy Ace 4
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 1
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100
  • Samsung Galaxy S Advance i9070
  • Samsung Galaxy S1

  • It's also worth pointing out that carriers often disable this feature, Verizon is the biggest culprit. Some devices may come with an FM Tuner, like the HTC One (M8), but Verizon disabled this. It's best to double check with your carrier beforehand, especially if you're with Verizon.
How important is this to you?

How to flash Firmware on Samsung devices without a PC

    Monday, 28 July 2014

If you like to jump on the latest firmware bandwagon as soon as the file is available or like trying out different custom ROMs, you’re most likely pretty comfortable with flashing your device. One of the downsides is that in order to get to this point, you need to have Samsung smartphone or tablet, a PC, and the Odin recovery software. Thankfully, a new mobile version of Odin has been released that helps users skip the whole PC part of the process and enabling users to do everything from their Samsung smartphones and tablets
    Cover art

    Mobile Odin Pro

What it comes down to is Odin being transferred over from a PC application to an Android one: it performs all the same functions as before with being able to flash ROMs, kernels, modify elements of the operating system, and more. The great advantage is now that it’s in a mobile package and can be used while on the go.
The developer behind Mobile Odin Pro is the one and only chainfire, the mastermind behind SuperSU and other great developer tools for the Android platform. Just a note though: the application itself does cost $4.99, but is a great tool if you own a Samsung device and enjoy flashing new firmware/custom ROMs.
You can grab the APK from the XDA Developers forum

    How to use

The process is pretty much like what we do on the PC with Odin, but from the comfort of your smartphone. Here’s a quick breakdown:
    1. Find the firmware that you want to install on your device. SamMobile has a great repository of firmwares for all Samsung products, just make sure it is compatible with your version of your device.
    2. Start Mobile Odin Pro.
    3. Choose Open File and select the firmware that you’ve downloaded to your device. Usually, Mobile Odin Pro will automatically detect this if you installed it on SD, but you may need to find the exact file yourself.
    4. Once you’ve selected the file, you can choose a bunch of other options to perform when flashing such as enabling Ever Root, auto-installing SuperSU, and others.
    5. Once done, select Flash Firmware and the process will begin.
So really, that’s it! All the same Odin goodness that we’re used to, but in a nice mobile package.
How did you find the mobile version of Odin?

BBM coming to Windows Phone next week

    Sunday, 27 July 2014

The hugely popular BBM app finally went cross-platform and arrived for iOS and Android devices last year, but those with Windows Phone devices have had to wait longer. The good news today is that BBM for Windows Phone is to make a general release next week now that it has gone through beta testing.

We knew that the BBM app for Windows Phone was on the way and last month we told how BlackBerry had confirmed that it would arrive by the end of July. A specific release date was not given at that time but it looks as though BlackBerry will just about deliver on time.

When registrations for the BBM beta app started there were 10,000 signups within the first 24 hours, and the app for beta testers was made available last week in the Windows Phone Store. Now BlackBerry has announced that the app will be available for everyone next week.

BBM version 2.0 for Windows Phone includes usual features such as Feeds, Chat and Contacts, and since beta testing began BlackBerry has responded to feedback from users by updating the app with bug fixes and new features. Earlier in the week an update brought transparent live tiles, a revamped UI for the picture preview window, and further additions.

BlackBerry hasn’t yet said exactly when the BBM app will go live for all on the Windows Phone Store next week, but at least we now know that it’s imminent.

    Skype update for Android

    Thursday, 24 July 2014

Skype got a bit of a revamp on iOS, and today the Skype 5.0 update rolled out for Android. It’s a major update for the social app, and it will now be a whole lot easier to find your friends on the service.

The Skype 5.0 update brings several new featuers to the table, but first and foremost, is the ability to find your friends easier. The new update allows you to connect Skype to the address book on your handset which makes starting a Skype chat a breeze.

Once you install the update, at some point it will ask you to verify your phone number. From there the app will search for matches between your address book and Skype, so your contacts will ‘evolve’ as more people from your contact list join Skype. You can choose whether you want your address book contacts added to Skype, and modify or delete the number associated with your account.

In addition to the mobile address book implementation, you’ll have a new feature to look forward to if you use a Microsoft account. The new update can automatically connect your address book to other Microsoft services like Outlook and Windows 8. If you have a Windows 8 machine, you probably have a Microsoft account, so it’s handy feature to have if you’re a Skyper.

The Skype 5.0 update is live on Google Play, but it may take a few weeks before you’re prompted for verification to start the contact search. The company says the new friend finding feature will come to other platforms in the near future as well.

Thousands of Nigerians signup for PayPal

    Tuesday, 22 July 2014

PayPal has signed up "tens of thousand" of Nigerians in its first week of operating in Africa's biggest economy, with consumers already purchasing items from Britain, China and the United States via its online platform, a company official said.
E-commerce remains in its infancy in most of Africa but is growing exponentially with the advent of online retailers such as Jumia, partly owned by South African phone operator MTN, and a growing middle class with money to spend.

Citizens of Africa's most populous nation could not buy goods directly from foreign merchants before the launch by PayPal, the payments unit of online auctioneer eBay Inc.
We have seen great uptake by Nigerians ... in terms of coverage," Malvina Goldfeld, PayPal's head of business development for sub-Saharan Africa, said in Lagos on Tuesday.
PayPal entered Nigeria and 10 other nations last month, providing online payment alternatives for consumers via mobile phones or PCs in markets often blighted by financial fraud. The new markets bring the number of countries PayPal serves to 203.
Goldfeld said that Paypal secured a few deals with electronics suppliers in China and Dubai ahead of its launch and that it had partnered with Nigerian lender First Bank, which has more than 10.5 million customers.
    FASHION AND ELECTRONICS
PayPal launched its platform in South Africa four years ago, Kenya last year and now Nigeria, Goldfeld said, giving the company access to shoppers across 40 sub-saharan African countries.
Goldfeld said the biggest interest has been in products from the United States, Britain and China, adding: "People are buying everything ... (but) there's definitely a concentration in electronics and fashion."
However, worries over internet security and online fraud have held back e-commerce growth in Nigeria, where 63 million people have active internet data subscriptions but only 1 percent of them make online transactions, First Bank said, noting that online purchases are expected to reach $1 billion this year.
Though challenges remain - including abysmal infrastructure, port delays, other supply chain woes and the task of persuading shoppers to trust websites with their bank details - Goldfeld says PayPal's reach will help to speed improvements.

"A lot of the merchants that we work with ... already ship to Nigeria. I think that the growth of e-commerce will push the logistics customers to up their game," she said.
