LG G Pad Lollipop Update

Tuesday, 2 December 2014

LG seems to be buoyed by the success of its G3 flagship smartphone this year and has rewarded its customers with an early Android 5.0 Lollipop update. LG was one of the slowest Android OEMs to release software updates in the past, but it looks like the company is finally getting serious about releasing Android updates in the quickest possible time. After its G3 flagship smartphone, it is now the turn of G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition tablet to receive the Android Lollipop update. The G3 is one of the first non-Nexus smartphones getting updated to Android Lollipop, and the G Pad 8.3 GPE is now the first non-Nexus tablet device to be updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop.
It is also the first Google Play Edition device to have received the Android 5.0 OTA update. There are a number of other GPE devices as well but it doesn’t seem like those are ready to receive the update just yet. HTC was supposed to update the One M8 GPE and One M7 GPE models to Lollipop last week but had to delay the rollout due to some bugs in the firmware. Many users have already received the update on their device, and more are expected to receive it over the next few days. If you’re impatient you can also get the update right now by downloading the Android 5.0 update ZIP file from XDA developers website. Once you download it to your computer, transfer it to the internal memory of your G Pad 8.3 GPE and flash it via custom recovery.
The Android 5.0 update brings several new changes like the updated Material Design user-interface, new notification UI & priorities with popup notifications, redesigned recent apps layout with easier task switching, battery life improvements courtesy of Project Volta, improved performance and switch to the Android Runtime (ART) as default, smart lock feature with trusted devices that lets you unlock your phone using devices such as Android Wear smart watches, and improved Bluetooth connectivity.
While the G Pad 8.3 GPE is getting updated to Android 5.0 now, we’re curious about the fate of the regular G Pad 8.3 model as LG hasn’t yet spoken about its plans on upgrading any of its devices except the LG G3 to Android 5.0. But since the GPE variant has been updated, there is still some hope that the regular model will also be updated to Android 5.0 at some point. When it announced the Lollipop update for the G3, LG did mention that they are considering some other devices for the Lollipop update and will share further details at a later stage. With the G3 Lollipop update expected to roll out across most regions by the end of the year, we might expect more information on LG’s Lollipop update plans by early next year.

Warning: Spider Bites kills

Sunday, 30 November 2014

Five-year-old Branson Riley Carlisle died this week after he was bitten by a brown recluse spider.
The Carlisle family is reportedly devastated after what seemed to be a freak accident. However, it has brought national attention to the dangers of these spiders.
The accident was something the family "would have never expected," said the hospital report.
Beware of Spider
The spider was found in the young boy's room after he was complaining about the bite. Once the Carlisles discovered the spider, they immediately rushed their child to the area hospital, The Examiner reported.
Although the family brought the young boy to the hospital right away, he died only hours after hw was bitten by the spider.
Five-year-old boy dies from spider biteInformation released about the boy's death showed that his condition worsened after being admitted to the hospital.
The Carlisle family noticed an increased amount of spiders in their home recently. In fact, the family has been having exterminators come to the house once a month to keep the arachnids under control. Experts say the cold winter weather brought the brown recluse into their home.
Though deaths from spider bites are considered to be a rare occurrence, with less than 10 American deaths attributed to spider bites each year, it is a reality that many people overlook.
A brown recluse has an extremely powerful bite. The spider generally stays away from people, but it has the ability to attack even when it's unprovoked. If the bite is not treated quickly enough, it can kill.
The spider can be found anywhere in the United States. It often hides in dark spaces or underneath furniture. People rarely see the creature.

Microsoft To reveal Windows 10 details

Those of us who use Windows 8 on a desktop computer or on a laptop without a touch display are eagerly awaiting the release of Windows 10, which Microsoft has promised will bring back a lot of the desktop-centric features that we’ve missed since Windows 7. Earlier this year Microsoft revealed several enterprise-centric features for Windows 10 to whet our appetites and now The media reports that Microsoft is gearing up to show off key consumer-centric features in Windows 10 this January.
Other than reporting Microsoft plans to announced these new details in late January, however, The media doesn’t really give us a lot of information about what these new features will be. During its fall event, Microsoft emphasized the return of the full Start menu to Windows 10 and also the new Continuum feature that will automatically detect whether your device is hooked up to a keyboard and mouse and give you the Desktop UI without at all taking you to the Modern UI. This feature will also take you to “tablet mode” when you touch your display or, if you own a 2-in-1 PC-tablet hybrid, when you aren’t hooked up to a mouse and keyboard.
Report claimed that there will be a consumer preview of Windows 10 released in early 2015, so we should definitely have a better idea of what the new platform will offer by then.

Charging your phone in 30 seconds

Monday, 24 November 2014

An Israeli company says it has developed technology that can charge a mobile phone in a few seconds and an electric car in minutes, advances that could transform two of the world's most dynamic consumer industries.

Using nano-technology to synthesize artificial molecules, Tel Aviv-based StoreDot says it has developed a battery that can store a much higher charge more quickly, in effect acting like a super-dense sponge to soak up power and retain it.
While the prototype is currently far too bulky for a mobile phone, the company believes it will be ready by 2016 to market a slim battery that can absorb and deliver a day's power for a smartphone in just 30 seconds.
"These are new materials, they have never been developed before," said Doron Myersdorf, the founder and chief executive of StoreDot, whose investors include Russian billionaire and Chelsea soccer club owner Roman Abramovich.

The innovation is based around the creation of "nanodots", which StoreDot describes as bio-organic peptide molecules. Nanodots alter the way a battery behaves to allow the rapid absorption and, critically, the retention of power.
The company has raised $48 million from two rounds of funding, including backing from a leading mobile phone maker. Myersdorf declined to name the company, but said it was Asian.

With the number of smartphone users forecast to reach 1.75 billion this year, StoreDot sees a big market, and some experts think that -- with more work -- it could be on to a winner.
"We live in a power hungry world ... people are constantly chasing a power outlet. StoreDot has the potential to solve this real big problem," said Zack Weisfeld, who has worked with and evaluated ventures in the mobile phone sector globally.
"They still have some way to go, to deal with size of battery and power cycle rounds, but if solvable, it's a very big breakthrough," he told the media. A power cycle round refers to the number of times a battery can be re-charged in its lifetime.
Myersdorf said a fast-charge phone would cost $100-$150 more than current models and would ultimately be able to handle 1,500 recharge/discharge cycles, giving it about three years of life.

He hopes to use the same technology to create a car battery that recharges in two or three minutes, rather than current models which commonly need to be charged overnight.

Nike auto-lacing shoe

Sunday, 23 November 2014

Nike has been attempting to bring another BttF product to real-life market, the auto-lacing Nike Mags, targeting an early 2015 release. The Mags are more or less replicas of the sneakers from the movie, which means that, while super rad, they’re also pretty ugly — the ankle strap alone would make you wish your skinny jeans fit over the top of the shoes. If you wanted a more fashionable auto-lacing option, though, The Powerteam brings you the Powerlace auto-lacing system, designed for less garish kicks.

Whereas the straps and laces on the Mags quickly snap into place, the Powerlace system slowly and automatically clamps the laces down in a less jarring manner when a foot is inserted into the shoe. Perhaps best of all, the auto-lacing relies solely on a lever, cables, and the weight of your own foot — no batteries, motors, gears, or springs. Furthermore, the lever and cables virtually don’t add extra weight to the shoe.
POWERLACE ADVANCED AUTO-LACING SHOE TECHNOLOGY's video posterThanks to the addition of a small lever on the back end of the shoe, you can adjust the tension of the laces to find the sweet spot of foot snugness, as well as to loosen the laces in order to take off the shoe. The system should last much longer than the average life of a shoe, as the designers made sure it could last for over 200,000 lacings.
Of course, like all awesome futuristic products, the Powerlace system is currently a Kickstarter project. An early bird pledge of $175 will net you a pair of the sneakers, which is a $20 discount of the normal price. If you know a bunch of people that want to get in on the auto-action, or are part of some shoe-worshipping cult and regularly run out of idols, you can grab 10 pairs for a pledge of $1,750.
Head on over to the Kickstarter campaign page to make a pledge, or to read up on exactly how the lever systems works.

Breakthrough Prizes for science and math winners

Thursday, 13 November 2014

Academia doesn't usually bring rich financial rewards.
But that changed Sunday for recipients of a record 12 Breakthrough Prizes, the award created two years ago by Russian billionaire venture capitalist Yuri Milner, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Google co-founder Sergey Brin and other tech industry luminaries. Each prize is worth $3 million, almost three times the cash a Nobel Prize winner receives.

This year is the first to honor mathematicians. Five won for work ranging from algebraic geometry to analytic number theory. In future, just one prize a year will go to a mathematician, organizers say; the large number Sunday celebrates the inaugural year for math.
Six prizes went to researchers in life sciences for discoveries in areas ranging from bacterial immunity to genetic regulation. The physics prize went to a group that showed the expansion of the universe was accelerating, not slowing as assumed.
The prizes' funders aim to generate a sense of excitement around scientific accomplishment, Milner said in an interview.
"We are trying to use all means available, including money, to get the message across," he said in an interview.
Milner, a onetime physics PhD student in Moscow who dropped out to move to the United States in 1990, has backed some of the world’s biggest technology companies, including Facebook.
Organizers threw some Hollywood razzle-dazzle into the mix. At the ceremony, Tesla chief executive Elon Musk chatted with actress Kate Beckinsale, while Twitter chief executive Dick Costolo sat by singer Christina Aguilera. Thomas Keller, chef of famed restaurant French Laundry, catered a meal including caviar appetizers and black-truffle lasagna.
REUTERS/Lucas Jackson Seth MacFarlane, creator of the hit TV series “Family Guy,” hosted the ceremony. Presenters included Beckinsale, Cameron Diaz, along with actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Hamm and Eddie Redmayne.
Science could use the marketing, with portrayals of nerdy science types rife in movies and on television, a characterization MacFarlane nodded to in his remarks.
"We're so glad that you all suck at sports," he told the roomful of scientists, adding that he hoped science would make advances such as putting a human being on Mars.
"Maybe Ted Cruz," he suggested, referring to the Texas politician.
In the interview, Milner contrasted today's low profile for scientists with 50 years ago, when scientist Albert Einstein was a household name.
“If you look at the list of celebrities now, you could probably not find a single scientist in the list of the top 200,” he said.
A self-proclaimed science fanatic, Milner keeps up with developments by reading stacks of science magazines.

"It's my only hobby," he said.
