In a short statement posted via its Public Policy handle, the social media platform says it is concerned about the blockade, promising to restore access to Nigerian users.
We are deeply concerned by the blocking of Twitter in Nigeria. Access to the free and #OpenInternet is an essential human right in modern society,” the organisation said.
“We will work to restore access for all those in Nigeria who rely on Twitter to communicate and connect with the world. #KeepitOn.”
That was the response from the microblogging platform, as a reaction to the ban on its activities by the Nigerian government.
Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Muhammed, on 05/06/2021, announced the ban and a federal government directive ordering the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
The suspension is a backdrop of Twitter’s deletion of President Muhammadu Buhari’s controversial tweet about the civil war after some Nigerian users found it offensive.
Nigerians have been denied access to the microblogging platform and can only access it by bypassing domain restrictions through alternative mediums.
The Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, ordered the prosecution of those using the app against the government’s directive.
This means you can use twitter.com from any browser of your choice but not through the official app.
More Restrictions On Broadcasting Media
The Nigerian National Broadcasting Commission, has ordered all broadcasting stations in the country to suspend their use of Twitter. The directive was issued Monday 07/06/2021, and the broadcasting stations include TV and radio platforms in the country.
In compliance to the directives, broadcasting stations are hereby advised to de-install Twitter handles and desist from using Twitter as a source.
The tweet made by President Muhammadu Buhari wherein he threatened to punish secessionists in the southeastern part of the country has resulted a spark between twitter and the nigerian government
Alongside the federal government directive was an order to the NBC to “immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.” While that is still a work in progress, Nigerians haven’t been able to use Twitter since the early hours of Saturday as telecom operators in the country restricted access to the platform. Yet, most people have employed VPNs and other alternative platforms to bypass the domain restrictions.
For now,m we gathered that there has been widespread criticism of the Twitter ban, both in the country and abroad. In a joint statement with the EU, the U.S., Canada and the U.K. expressed disappointment in the ban. They called out the Buhari-led administration for censorship and human right violation and requested that the Nigerian government reconsider its stance.
