Gadget of the Week: Cyber-shot QX10

We've seen so many new devices this week: Sony Xperia Z1, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Note 10.1, LG G2, Acer Liquid S2, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, Xperia Z1 Mini, Galaxy Gear and the list goes on.
But when I started to think about the favorite gadget of the week – and more than that, the best gadget in terms of impact – it was a pretty clear choice: the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-QX10 and QX100 attachable lenses for smartphones.

Why is it so cool?

There's a number of reasons why I think these lens/camera attachments are the coolest, and most important, of all the new gadgets I've seen this week.

The reason the Cyber-shot lenses blow everything else out of the water is not even related to their superior photographic performance. It's about adaptability.

The thing about the Sony Cyber-shot lenses is that, beyond being far better lenses than anything else we'll see on smartphones for quite some time, they are even more importantly transferable, permanent, and stand-alone devices.That means whether you switch from phone to phone, use a tablet, upgrade your device or don't even have your phone with you, you are still capable of getting the best digital images beyond a DSLR or high-end point-and-shoot camera. And no matter what phone you use, or plan to use in future, your lens attachment will work just fine, even across operating systems. This makes the considerable outlay ($250/$500) for one of these lenses that much easier to swallow: it's a photographic investment, much like a good lens for a ''real'' camera. You'll have it much longer than your current smartphone.

Whats the meaning?

The creative opportunities this opens up for smartphone photography are far more wide-ranging than a simple improvement in the latest iPhone camera, because these lenses offer something smartphone lenses will most likely never be able to achieve in terms of performance. Unlike theGalaxy S4 Zoom, you don't have to make sacrifices with your smartphone to get a good camera either: they take the camera quality question out of the smartphone purchase equation. If you just want to snap a quick picture, use your phone, if you want a real photo, whip out your awesome lens attachment and get the results you want.As smartphones push further and further into the realm of digital photography, but don't always succeed, this new development essentially offers an escape from that particular facet of the battle for your consumer dollar. And if you've ever been dissatisfied with the camera on your smartphone, this could be just what you've been waiting for.

BlackBerry Ltd said on Wednesday that its popular BlackBerry Messenger instant chat application will be available for rival devices using Google Inc's Android software and for Apple's iPhone this weekend.

The struggling Canadian smartphone maker had announced plans to open up the service, often referred to as BBM by both fans and the company, back in May.

Once a unique tool to send short messages without running up SMS charges, BBM now competes with mobile instant messaging products from Facebook, Apple and others, and less directly with the micro-blogging service Twitter.

Android users will be able to download the application on Saturday, while iPhone users can get it on Sunday.

BlackBerry unveils the Z30 as its new flagship smartphone

BlackBerry Ltd launched its new Z30 flagship smartphone on Wednesday, as it battles to win back market share

Once a pioneer in the smartphone arena, BlackBerry said last month it was weighing options that could include an outright sale, in the face of lackluster sales of its new devices that run on the BlackBerry 10 operating system.

The long-rumored Z30 device, unveiled at an event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, will be BlackBerry's new top-of-the-line device, taking the crown from the smaller Z10 that was launched early this year.

The new touchscreen device, which boasts a five-inch display and a 1.7 gigahertz processor, will compete against the likes of Apple Inc's iPhone 5S and Samsung Electronics Co's Galaxy S4, along with a slew of other devices that are powered by Google Inc's Android platform.

The company faces an uphill battle in generating interest in the new phone, however, given the lack of clarity over its future.

Wells Fargo analyst Maynard Um said the success of the Z30 would depend on carrier availability, pricing and the pace of consumer adoption.

"While the Z30 helps to bring the focus back to the fundamental business, we believe investors' attention is focused on a potential take-out," said Um in a note to clients.

While the company has long aspired to make its BlackBerry 10 operating system the No. 3 smartphone platform in the market, the latest industry data indicates that Microsoft Corp's Windows Phone platform is in fact more likely to clinch that spot as its devices continue to gain ground.

Although the new line of BlackBerry devices has been well received by reviewers, analysts say the company lacks the financial heft to vie against industry giants like Apple, Google, Samsung and Microsoft, which boast massive marketing and research and development budgets.

Some analysts contend that Microsoft's move earlier this month to acquire Nokia's phone business and license its patents for 5.44 billion euros ($7.3 billion) poses another hurdle for BlackBerry, as the software giant is likely to redouble its catch-up efforts in the mobile device business.

But Waterloo, Ontario-based BlackBerry, which is set to report its fiscal second-quarter results next week, appears to be sticking with its product roadmap for now, even as it reviews its alternatives.

The company, which touts the Z30 as its "biggest, fastest and most advanced smartphone" to date, said the device will begin to hit store shelves in the UK and parts of the Middle East as early as next week.

The smartphone will go on sale with select carriers and retailers in other regions over the remainder of the year, said the company, adding specific pricing and availability will be announced by its partners at the time of their respective launches.

PS4 Up To 50% Faster Than Xbox One

The launch dates for the next generation game consoles have been released and the world eagerly awaits the new and improved consoles. PS4 and Xbox One go toe to toe in the battle of the games console.

PS4 Coming out Swinging

Early reports from developers who have studied the intricate workings of the consoles seem to indicate a clear hit and a miss for the Xbox One regarding speed.

Not only is the RAM in the PS4 faster than the Xbox One by 40-50% but the graphics card in Sony’s console was shown to operate at 30 frames per second (fps) with a full 1080 resolution while Microsoft’s baby reduced the resolution to below 30 fps even at a resolution of 900.

Since Microsoft, who have also been pushed into changing certain policies by disgruntled fans, were made aware of the substantial gap in performance, it seems they may have tried to bridge the gap slightly by boosting the speed with a CPU upgrade. (1.6GHz – 1.75GHz).

Other Differences

There are a few other differences between the two consoles that gamers might be swayed by when choosing which console will take pride of place in their homes:

• Release Date – Sony have decided to split the release of the PlayStation with North America being able to purchase the console on November 15^th and Europe having to wait for a week until the 22^nd. Microsoft on the other hand have gone for a global launch of Xbox One on November 22^nd.
• Design – Xbox One is bigger than its predecessor (Xbox 360) by 10% and weighs in at 3kg. The PlayStation4 is only slightly lighter at 2.8kg with a sleek, split look design.
• Release Games – Although there is a plethora of games for both consoles (Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, Call of Duty Ghosts) it’s the exclusive games that will have the biggest effect on whether a gamer purchases an Xbox One or PS4. Xbox fans can look forward to favorites Halo, Forza and Dead Rising 3 while PS4 will come alive with the sights and sounds from Dark Sorcerer, Drive Club and Killzone Shadow Fall
• The Truth
  Speculation is all very well and good but at the end of the day, that’s all it is. Hardware hasn’t been set in stone for either console. So until they are released and the put to the test in real life situations, nobody can truly tell which will take the title for best games console.
